Instead of drawing four individual walls to make up a rectangular room, the Wall Room command can be used to pick and drag rooms or specify X and Y coordinates.

Note:
The specified dimensions for the Wall Room command are always the internal dimensions of the room. It is not necessary to specify negative values as the room will be drawn in the direction of the cursor.

Step 1: Set the Timber 1 wall current.

Use the
Draw Walls command to access the Smart Architect Select Wall Types dialog box and set the Timber 1 wall current.

Step 2: Choosing the <R>oom option from the Draw Wall command line.

From point...<N>ew/<M>easure/<R>oom/<P>ick to convert: R ¿
Sets the <R>oom option current.

Step 3: Draw a 5000 x 5000mm [ 17' x 17' ] enclosure. (Internal dimensions)

<M>easure/Pick Bottom Left Corner of Room ...<Exit>: Pick a point towards the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Drag your cursor up to the top right of the screen.
Specifies the bottom left hand internal corner of the room and indicates the direction of the room by dragging the cursor to the top right.

Room Size in X:
5000 ¿ [ 17'¿ ]
Sets the internal walls to 5000mm [ 17' ] in the X direction.

Room Size in Y:
5000 ¿ [ 17'¿ ]
Sets the internal walls to 5000mm [ 17' ] in the Y direction.

<U>ndo/<M>easure/Pick Bottom Left Corner of Room ...<Exit>: ¿
Exits the Wall Room command.

Step 4: Use the Zoom commands to zoom out sufficiently to have the room fully on the screen with some space around the perimeter to do some further work.

Step 5: Invoke the Wall Room command without accessing the Smart Architect Select Wall Types dialog box.

Command: WR ¿
Shortcut to Wall Room Command.

Note:
If the Wall Room command is the first Wall command used in a drawing session, the Smart Architect Select Wall Types dialog box will automatically open. If however, the Wall Room command is used a second time or after the Draw Walls command, the dialog box will not open and the last used wall type will be used. The dialog box cannot be opened from within the Wall Room command, the Draw Wall command has to be used and the <N>ew option selected.

Step 6: Draw another room alongside the first using the <M>easure option.

<M>easure/Pick Bottom Left Corner of Room ...<Exit>: M ¿
Sets the <M>easure option current.

Select Wall to Measure: Pick a point on the outer line of the right-hand wall towards the bottom corner.
Indicates which wall to measure along and which end to measure from. (Refer to Figure 2.2.1)

Note:
If you pick on the internal line of the wall, the measurement will be taken from the internal corner.

Wall Segment length is... 5180 [17'-7 1/4"]
The length of the selected wall is indicated.

Distance along Wall...<1000mm>[<3'-4">]: 2000 ¿ [ 7' ¿ ]
Distance along wall to bottom left hand corner of new room.

Move your cursor towards the top right hand corner of the screen.

Room Size in X: 5000 ¿ [ 17'¿ ]
Sets the internal walls to 5000mm in the X direction.

Room Size in Y:
5000 ¿ [ 17'¿ ]
Sets the internal walls to 5000mm in the Y direction.

<U>ndo/<M>easure/Pick Bottom Left Corner of Room ...<Exit>: ¿
Exits the Wall Room command.

            Figure 2.2.1

Exercise:
Check the distance between the outer faces of the bottom walls of the two rooms, this should be 1910mm [ 6' -8 3/8" ]. The distance of 2000mm [ 7' ] at which you started the new room was to the bottom left Internal corner, so the thickness of the wall falls to the outside of the room. (Room dimensions are always internal dimensions).

Step 7: Draw a third enclosure linking the two rooms at the top left-hand corner.

Command: WR ¿
Shortcut to Wall Room Command.

<M>easure/Pick Bottom Left Corner of Room ...<Exit>: Pick a point in the corner of the top wall of the first room and the left-hand wall of the second.
Specifies the starting point of the new room.

Note:
Pick a point within the walls or as close to the corner as possible. It is not necessary to use any Object Snaps. The Maximum Wall Cut setting controls this junction. (Refer to Figure 2.2.3).

            figure4-8
            Figure 2.2.3

Move your cursor towards the top left-hand corner of the screen to indicate the direction the room is to be drawn.

Room Size in X: 7000 ¿ [ 23'¿ ]
Sets the internal walls to 7000mm in the X direction.

Room Size in Y: 5000 ¿ [ 17'¿ ]
Sets the internal walls to 5000mm in the Y direction.

<U>ndo/<M>easure/Pick Bottom Left Corner of Room ...<Exit>: ¿
Exits the Wall Room command.

Step 8: Use the SAVEAS command and save this drawing as Tutorial_2.dwg

Exercise:
Start a new drawing using the SA2K-metric.dwt [Imperial - SA2K-imperial.dwt] as the template file. Use the Wall Room command to generate a series of interlinking and overlapping rooms.

Note:
The only time it is acceptable to draw one wall on top of another in Smart Architect is when using the Wall Room command. At no other time is this to be done. Walls should not be copied, moved or drawn on top of each in any other circumstances.
